A university professor, he was born in Ribeira Grande, a city that he keeps in his heart and where he wants to spend his retirement years. He emigrated to Montreal in 1978 where he earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree, followed by a doctorate in Toronto. In both cities, he“fell in love” with the Portuguese/Azorean emigrant communities, studying and promoting them through his research. He has over 100 articles published (chapters in books, articles in journals, working papers, government reports, etc.). He has also published several books about the Portuguese/Azorean presence in Canada including “Immigrant Geographies in North American Cities” (Oxford University Press), which today isa textbook at many Canadians and American universities.
In 2012, he was selected for the Honor Book sponsored by the Geographic Perspectives on Women Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers.
