José Manuel Tavares Rebelowasborn in thevillageof São Sebastião, Ponta Delgada, Azores, onMay 5, 1939andisthesonofFrancisco Maria Pimentel Rebelo and Adriana Coelho de Gusmão Tavares do Canto Taveira. He got married in the village of Sé, Porto, in 1969 and had two children: Jorge Manuel ValençaRebeloand Pedro Manuel ValençaRebelo.

He attended the Antero de QuentalSecondary School in Ponta Delgada between 1950 and 1960 and was a schoolmate of Carlos Melo Bento, José Medeiros Ferreira andJoão Bosco MotaAmaral.
José Manuel Tavares Rebelo graduated in History at the University of Coimbra.

He was a cofounder of the House of the Azores of the North and its President between 1993 and 2008. Considered to be one of the architects of theWorld Council of Houses of the Azores, he was a cofounder and its President in 2001.

He was also a cofounder of the Atlantic Confraria of Tea in 2007 and its president.
Professionally, he was a sub-lieutenant of the Air Force Police in Angola from 1963 to 1965 and the Principal of the Augusto César Pires de Lima School in Porto from 1988 and 1997, a school where he also taught.

He was and is a member of the following institutions:

• Associação dos Antigos Estudantes de Coimbra no Porto;
• Associação de Solidariedade Social dos Professores;
• Associação dos Tutores e Amigos das Crianças Africanas;
• Clube Micaelense;
• Fórum Açoriano;
• Instituto Cultural de Ponta Delgada.
