The quality, commitment and contribution of the Portuguese community to the agricultural sector in California are a source of pride and recognition across the country and beyond.
The first Portuguese emigrants arrived in California over a century ago. Since then, thousands of Azoreans have set off into the unknown in search of a new life. Today about 90% of the Portuguese population that lives in that US state has its roots in the Azores Archipelago.
A large number of these Portuguese emigrants, Azoreans and others, began working in the agricultural sector. Their knowledge and mastery of farming techniques, along with California’s productive land, allowed them to thrive in the sector. The Portuguese agri-food production in the state of California began to have a considerable weight in the economic structure of the sector, and over the years, it has played a leading role in the state’s economy, generating jobs and quality products recognized worldwide.
The decades of work and dedication of the Portuguese emigrants have also led to the establishment and affirmation of the Portuguese community as the owner of some of the largest agricultural, dairy and livestock companies of the United States.
